Hair transplant for men is a routine procedure at trichologists’ clinics. But what about hair transplants for women? Very few women undergo a hair transplant because their hair loss is either not as severe as in men or they don’t make good candidates.

So, are you a good candidate for a female hair transplant? Should you opt for this procedure to get your mane back? Is it as successful in women as in men? Let’s find out.

Can a woman get a hair transplant?

A big yes! Women can get hair transplant surgery to correct hair loss or thinning. Many reasons, including genetics, hormone imbalances, illnesses, and stress, can cause hair thinning or loss in women.

Hair loss in women can occasionally be transient and get better with medication, dietary, or lifestyle changes. Yet, hair transplant surgery can be a good solution for women with permanent hair loss or thinning.

The good candidates for female hair transplant are patients with healthy hair on the donor site. It includes patients from:

  • Androgenetic Alopecia– It is a genetic condition of female pattern baldness.
  • Non-Hormonal Issues– These include PCOS, thyroid, or other hormonal imbalances that cause hair loss. Treating hormonal disease is a better choice than a hair transplant.
  • Burn Victims– If healthy donor hair is recovered, the patient can undergo a hair transplant.
  • Male To Female Trans People– Biological males at birth have healthy donor hair at the sides. Thus, they can opt for surgery.
  • Alopecia marginalis– Hair loss in the frontal area of the hairline.
  • Traction Alopecia– Hair loss from wearing tight ponytails.

What is the success rate of hair transplants for women?

The success rate of hair transplants for women can vary depending on several factors, such as the cause and extent of hair loss, the experience and skill of the surgeon, and the individual’s health and healing process.

In India, the success rate for female hair transplants is between 80% to 95%. This high degree of outcome ratio shows that many women have enhanced their lifestyle from hair transplants.

Which hair transplant method is best for women?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the best method for hair transplant in women. It is safer than Follicular Unit Transplant that is popular in male hair transplants. However, FUE hair transplant in women can be more challenging than in men due to the diffuse pattern of hair loss in women.

FUE hair transplant is an appealing choice for women who wish to prevent visible scarring. It is a minimally invasive technique that doesn’t call for a major incision or sutures. Also, the recovery period is brief, and the majority of patients can resume their regular activities in a matter of days.

Women who have experienced hair thinning or loss from heredity, hormone imbalances, illnesses, or stress may benefit from FUE hair transplantation. As individual hair follicles rather than a strip of the scalp are transplanted, FUE hair transplant can produce a more natural-looking result than other hair restoration treatments.

Who is not suitable for a female hair transplant?

Everything may seem good until now. But here’s the thing. Hair transplants are not an option for every woman. If you are suffering from any of the conditions below, your trichologist will not suggest a hair transplant as the best course of action.

Severe hair loss: If you have lost a lot of hair, there might not be enough healthy hair follicles to transplant, which lowers the likelihood that the treatment will be effective.

Active hair loss: If you are still experiencing hair loss, a hair transplant might not be successful since the transplanted hair follicles might keep falling out.

Medical issues: If you have alopecia areata, you may not be a good candidate for a hair transplant. The operation could also be more difficult if you have other diseases like scalp psoriasis.

Low overall health: Women with chronic medical issues or poor general health may not be candidates for hair transplants. Before having any surgical treatment, you must get a thorough medical checkup.

These medical issues decrease the chance of survival of new hair follicles. Thus, they reduce the success rate of female hair transplants, which is no longer a viable option for you.

Always consult an experienced hair transplant surgeon to diagnose your hair loss before going in for treatment. Take second opinions from your family doctor to ensure you are not suffering from any nutrient deficiencies. Lastly, even if you get the transplant, keep realistic expectations of the results.
