Common summer skin problems and ways to tackle them:

Acne Breakouts-

When sweat mixes with bacteria and oils on the skin, it leads to clogging of pores and breakouts in acne-prone skins. Dermatologists performing skin treatment in summer will recommend the following steps:

  • Blot sweat from the skin with a clean towel/cloth – Wiping sweat off leads to skin irritation resulting in breakouts.

  • Wash sweaty clothes, headbands, towels, and hats before wearing them again.

  • Use non-comedogenic products on the face, neck, back, and chest. Check labels like “oil-free” or “won’t clog pores.”

  • Blot sweat from the skin with a clean towel/cloth – Wiping sweat off leads to skin irritation resulting in breakouts.

  1.  Dry, Irritated Skin-You may develop dry irritated skin due to hot outdoor air. The biggest culprits are spending time under the sun, in the pool, and air-conditioning. Skin treatment in summer involves:
  • Shower and shampoo immediately after getting out of the pool, using fresh, clean water and mild cleanser/body wash formulated for swimmers.
  • Apply water-resistance sunscreen with SPF30+ protection.
  • Use a mild cleanser, avoiding soaps, and body washes labelled “antibacterial” or “deodorant” which may dry your skin.
  • Take warm showers and baths.
  • Slather on a fragrance-free moisturizer after every shower, applying it within 5 minutes of taking bath.
  • Carry moisturizer and apply after washing hands.
  • Turn up the thermostat.
  1. Folliculitis-You develop folliculitis, one of the summer skin diseases, when follicles or opening from where hair grows, gets infected. These hair follicles are tender and itchy, giving the appearance of pimples, and mostly occur on body parts having maximum hair like the scalp, face, armpits, chest, back, neck, thighs, and buttocks.
  2. Remedies:
  • Bath affected areas with water boiled with Neem leaves twice a day.

 Prevention:

  • Change clothes frequently after outdoor activities.
  • Avoid swimming in chlorinated water.
  • Increase water intake.
  • Wear soothing clothes.
  • Use your towel after wax/shaving or ensure proper hygiene at the salon.
  • Avoid shaving over bumps, changing razor blade or electric shaver if shaving requires.
  1. Infection from Manicure and Pedicure-Manicures and pedicures make your nails look great, but they often can lead to germs causing infections. However, taking necessary precautions can help you avoid infections. Dermatologists providing skin treatment in summer, recommend:

  • Applying cream to moisturize nails.
  • Never cut or forcefully push back cuticles.
  • Look for strict cleanliness and disinfection guidelines.

  1. Melasma-

Melasma is one of the summer skin diseases caused by overexposure to the sun. It’s called brown or grey “sun spots” appearing on the face and neck, causing discoloured patches. People with melasma generally have it throughout the year, but harmful UV sun rays make the patches look darker.

Prevention:

  • Limiting sun exposure, wearing sunscreen and a hat.
  • Use of broad-spectrum sunscreen and repeat every 2 hourly is imp to prevent rebound pigmentation
  • Add- Certain skin lightening treatments can be tried like chemical peels, and light therapies to lighten the pigmentation, under the guidance of your skin expert.
  1. Heat Rash-When your sweat glands are blocked, you end up having heat rash and tiny itchy bumps. Heat rash generally disappears in a few days on its own, but consulting a dermatologist providing skin treatment in Pune or elsewhere, is a feasible idea if it persists or worsens or has signs of infection.

Prevention:

  • Wear light and loose-fitting clothing when outdoors.
  • Work out during the coolest time of day.
  • Cool skin using fans or air conditioning.

If you suffer from sun allergy, one of the summer skin diseases, you get extremely itchy, red, scaly bumps on some or all your bare parts. Medications like Doxycycline and Ketoprofen also trigger Sun allergy.

Prevention:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure by using shades, wearing sun-protective clothes & applying water-resistance sunscreen with SPF30 or more.
  • Anyone with high temperature or rash-like Chickenpox and measles common in summers should consult dermatologists offering skin treatment in Pune.
  • Insect bites of mosquitoes, spiders, and ants during summer, if severe, require dermatologist consultation.
  1. Sun-Tan-Constant long-term exposure to the sun ends you up being sun-tanned, a defence mechanism to strong light. The severe form of tanning is called sun-burning involving itchy skin, peeling and redness.

Remedy:

  • Sunscreen.
  • Oral antioxidants & Vitamin C.
  • Light-coloured clothing, sunglasses, hat, umbrella.

  • Cover exposed skin while outdoors.
  • Mosquito net.
