Welcome back from the doctor’s office after your successful hair transplant. Now that you have completed a (literally!) life-changing surgery, we know you are eager to gain your confidence and all your hair back. But wait, all you need is to show a little patience for the hair transplant recovery process to get the best results possible.

We know you are experiencing many first-time sensations. Therefore, here is the answer to all your queries that you may have after the transplant.

How long does it take for your head to recover after a hair transplant?

Let us take you on a journey of follicular renaissance, where every day brings you closer to crowning glory.

Day 1: As your hair transplant process nears completion, you may experience a mix of excitement and discomfort. Your scalp will most likely be sensitive, necessitating pain medication. Rest and let the healing process begin.

Days 2-3: Your scalp may feel tight and puffy, but this is normal. Your body is hard at work healing, and your new hair grafts are taking hold. Follow your doctor’s recommendations and avoid intense activity.

Days 4–7: Ah, the optimum window for healing! Your pain should be minor, and your swelling should start to go down. As your scalp heals, you could experience irritation, but try not to scratch it and trust the process instead. Your hair follicles are growing new cells and getting ready for their big entrance.

Days 8–14: You’ve reached the last stretch! Keep your scalp clean and hydrated since your hair transplant areas will start to scab over. Start washing your hair lightly now, but stay away from any harsh shampoos or conditioners.

Days 15–21: It’s time to bid those bothersome scabs farewell. They will naturally fall off, so don’t worry, just wait patiently and repress the impulse to pick at them. Your scalp sensitivity will start to decrease, and you might see some baby hairs poking through.

Congratulations, you’ve made it through Days 22–30! Your scalp has completely healed, and your new hair is already sprouting. Trust the process and enjoy the journey to a new head of hair. It can take many months for your hair to mature, and to experience the full results of your hair transplant.

What should you not do after a hair transplant?

You must take care of your scalp after a hair transplant to ensure that your newly transplanted hair follicles take root and grow appropriately. Following a hair transplant, you should avoid the following activities:

Avoid touching or scratching your scalp: It’s critical not to touch or scratch your scalp because this can dislodge the newly transplanted follicles.

Avoid vigorous exercise: For at least a week following your hair transplant, you should refrain from engaging in vigorous exercise or physical activity. These include exercises like jogging and weightlifting or any other activity that could result in excessive perspiration.

Avoid wearing tight caps or helmets since they pressurize your scalp and slow the healing process. You should not wear any excessively tight headgear for at least a week after your hair transplant.

Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol: These vices might hinder recovery and raise the possibility of problems. Following your hair transplant, it is advised to steer clear of these activities for a few weeks.

Don’t wash your hair too soon after getting a transplant; your doctor will give you specific instructions on when to begin. It’s crucial to follow these recommendations and avoid washing your hair too soon because doing so can impede the healing process.

After getting a hair transplant, you should refrain from exposing your scalp to direct sunlight for a few weeks. Wear a hat or apply sunscreen to protect your scalp if you must be outside.

When can I touch my transplanted hair?

However strong the urge will be to scratch or touch your hair, do not do it. The first 2-3 days are a critical period for hair lodging as the transplanted hair is fragile in this stage. However, you can touch your hair to clean it after a week.

When will you see the hair transplant results?

Hair transplant results will show after you have made a complete hair transplant recovery. Once the hair follicles take root, it is a matter of 6-12 months before you will see a head full of hair.

Will my donor area grow back?

Now, the regrowth of the donor area will completely depend on the method and follicular graft extractions. If your surgeon extracts more follicular grafts, there is a high chance that the donor area will not regain its volume. But, the donor area is hidden by the longer hair around it. So you need not worry about a bald patch.

Now that you are armed with the finest knowledge about your aftercare, we wish you all the best on your hair transplant recovery journey. Be very gentle with the new babies on your head till they mature to full-size, luscious hair.
